STORRS, CT (November 15) -- Junior goalkeeper Shannon Murphy (Mapleville, RI) stopped thirty shots, but the University of Connecticut women's ice hockey team could not overcome an early deficit, as the Huskies dropped a 1-0 decision to No. 2 Dartmouth Saturday afternoon, at the UConn Ice Arena in Storrs. UConn slips to 2-5-3 after the loss, while Dartmouth remains unbeaten at 4-0-0.
Cherie Piper scored the game’s lone goal at the 10:22 mark of the first period. However, Murphy and the UConn defense would not allow Dartmouth’s high-powered offense to score again, and kept UConn in the game. This year’s trend of excellent penalty killing by the Husky defense continued, as UConn killed off all seven of Dartmouth's power-play opportunities.
Murphy made several spectacular saves, the most remarkable coming with eight minutes remaining in the second session. Gillian Apps got ahead of the Husky defense and created a breakaway opportunity. However, Murphy made a diving save to keep UConn just one goal behind.
After a flurry in front of the Dartmouth net with time winding down, the Huskies managed to find the back of the net, but the officials ruled the goal to be after time expired.
Stephanie Cochran made 18 saves for Dartmouth, and UConn was out-shot 31-to-18 by the nation’s second ranked team.
The Huskies will get another crack at Dartmouth on Sunday when the two teams take the ice once again at 2:00 p.m. in Storrs.
