STORRS, CT (November 16) -- Gillian Apps scored twice and Cherie Piper tallied two assists to lead #2 Dartmouth to a 3-0 win over the University of Connecticut women’s ice hockey team. UConn trailed just 1-0 until midway through the third when Apps’ scored her first goal, and the final tally came with just 33 seconds remaining after the Huskies’ had pulled goaltender Kaitlyn Shain (Calgary, Alberta).
Dartmouth remains undefeated with a 5-0 record following the win, while UConn drops to 2-6-3 overall. The improving Huskies showed their strength in the two-game series against the Big Green, allowing just four goals in the two games combined. In 2002-03, Dartmouth scored 13 goals against UConn in two games. Shain came up huge for the Huskies with 42 saves, including 18 in the second period.
Danielle Grundy was the first to put a goal on the board when she knocked in her own rebound off a Shain save with 12:44 remaining in the second period. Louise Pietrangelo was credited with an assist.
The Huskies’ best chance to get on the board came at the end of the second period, when Stefanie Snow (Nashua, NH) nearly knocked in a shot that hit the post and went just wide. Early in the third period, UConn found themselves down two players, but were able to hold off the Big Green through the entire power play.
Just prior to midway through the third period, Dartmouth goaltender Stephanie Cochran ruined another chance for the Huskies, stopping three consecutive shots from the crease.
Apps scored her first goal shortly after the big saves by Cochran, getting the rebound and finding a hole after a shot by teammate Anderson and a save by Shain. Piper also tallied an assist on the goal.
UConn pulled Shain with just over two minutes remaining in the game, but a penalty shortly after gave them just five skaters on the ice, and Apps took advantage of the situation with a clean shot off an assist from Piper.
Penalties hurt both teams in the highly physical game, as the Huskies were charged with nine penalties and Dartmouth with 10. UConn was out-shot by the Big Green 45 to 23.
The Huskies will return to the ice on Saturday, November 22, when they host Hockey East rival Boston College at 2:00 p.m. at the UConn Ice Arena.
