Huskies Suffer 47-13 Defeat at No. 5 VA Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech outscored UConn 27-0 in the first half and continued to roll in the second as the Hokies posted a 47-13 win over the Huskies on Saturday. The loss drops UConn to 3-2 on the season while fifth-ranked Virginia Tech improves to 4-0.
UConn running back Terry Caulley, who entered the game as the country’s leading rusher with 601 yards on the year, injured his right knee on his second carry of the day and missed the rest of the game.
The Hokies were led by running back Kevin Jones, who gained 105 yards on 12 carries with a touchdown.
Virginia Tech scored in a variety of ways including a passing touchdown, rushing touchdown, field goal, an interception return for a TD, a kickoff return for a TD and a blocked punt for a TD.
UConn opened the game with a strong drive, including a 52-yard pass from Dan Orlovsky to Shaun Feldeisen on the first play from scrimmage. The Huskies moved the ball to the VT 21, but Matt Nuzie then missed a 40-yard field goal attempt.
The Husky defense then forced a Hokie punt which set up and 1st and 10 at the UConn 21. Caulley got the call for a two-yard gain, but injured his knee on that play with 11:14 left in the first quarter.
Cornell Brickington (53 yards) and Matt Lawrence (48 yards), who made his collegiate debut in the game, were UConn's leading rushers. Virginia Tech scored 10 points in the first quarter – on a 38-yard field goal by Carter Warley with 2:13 left to play and on a 28-yard TD pass from Bryan Randall to Ernest Wilford with 6:52 left.
The Hokies extended their lead to 27-0 at halftime as Eric Green returned an interception 84 yards for a score, Kevin Jones had a 23-yard TD rush and Warley added a 35-yard field goal with 38 seconds to go in the half.
The second half did not start much better for the Huskies as Mike Imoh return the opening kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown. Chris Clifton then scored a TD on a 16 yard return of a blocked punt to make it 40-0.
UConn broke into the scoring column late in the third quarter as Orlovsky hit Matt Cutaia on a six-yard TD pass. Graig Vicidomino made his collegiate debut nailing the extra point. The key play of the drive was a 47-yard pass from Orlovsky to Cutaia.
The Huskies put another touchdown on the board late with an impressive 15-play, 97-yard march. Brockington and Lawrence led most of the charge before Orlovsky capped things off with a 27-yard TD pass to Keron Henry.
