Ferris State Tops Men’s Hockey, 5-3
BIG RAPIDS, Mich. (Nov. 12) – The University of Connecticut men’s hockey team suffered a 5-3 setback to Ferris State on Friday evening. With the loss, UConn drops to 1-6-1 overall (0-1-0 AHA) while the Bulldogs improve to 3-8-0 on the year.
Ferris State jumped out to a 2-0, lead in the first period. Tim Vokey opened the scoring with an unassisted power play goal 2:05 into the stanza and Jim Jorgensen followed with a tally from Derek Nesbitt and Greg Rallo at 8:09.
The Huskies then came out after the first intermission with an offensive burst and quickly knotted the score at two as sophomore Trevor Stewart (Elk River, Minn.) netted his first of the season 38 seconds into the period and senior Beau McLaughlin (Virginia Beach, Va.) then notched the equalizer at 1:54 off a feed from junior Ryan Palmer (Groton, Mass.).
The Bulldogs stormed back, however, scoring the next three goals. Zac Pearson posted Ferris State’s third goal of the evening 3:19 into the second, while Joe Van Culin netted the teams’ fourth at 19:21. Jeff Legue scored the Bulldogs’ fifth and final goal at 17:21 in the third.
Sophomore Matt Scherer (Seattle, Wash.) put in UConn’s third of the night with four seconds remaining in the contest, a power play goal from senior Mark Murphy (Jamestown, R.I.).
Freshman netminder Brad Smith (Detroit, Mich.) stopped 42 shots in net for Connecticut and Derek MacIntyre made 19 saves for Ferris State.
The Huskies continue their two-game series with the Bulldogs on Saturday, Nov. 13, with the contest slated for 7:00 p.m.
