UConn Inks Nine Recruits for 2004 Season

The University of Connecticut field hockey team and head coach Nancy Stevens have announced that seven incoming freshmen recruits and two transfers have committed to enroll at the University of Connecticut in the fall of 2004. Lauren Aird (Harare, Zimbabwe), Claire Carwell (Laconia, NH), Brittany Chadbourne (Gardiner, ME), Jacqueline Leone (Newtown, PA), Rachel Sauer (Warrenton, VA), Mandy Odenbach (Penfield, NY) and Katie Scully (Ossining, NY) will enroll at the University this fall.
Lizzy Peijs (Breda, Holland), transfers to Connecticut with four years of eligibility remaining and Justine Odenwaelder (Goshen, CT) will enroll at UConn as a sophomore.
Aird, a forward/midfielder from Harare, Zimbabwe, played on the Zimbabwe National Team from 2002-2003 and played in the 2003 All-Africa Games. She was also a member of the Zimbabwe U-18 and U-16 National Teams.
Carwell, a goalkeeper from Laconia, N.H. where she was a standout at Laconia High, was awarded the “Achievement Scholarship” by UConn for academic excellence. Carwell was honored as a First Team All-State selection after her junior and senior years and was also named Lake Region Player of the Year.
A forward from Gardener, Maine, Chadbourne was selected as a First Team All-State honoree and was also named Kennebec Journal Player of the Year. Chadbourne was also a member of the AAU Junior Olympics.
Leone, a back from Newtown, Pa., played at Council Rock North High School where her team won the league title last season. Leone was named team captain her senior year and also competed on the winter and spring track teams.
A forward from Warrenton, Va., Sauer earned mention on the All-District and All-State First team. Sauer was also honored as the District Defensive Player of the Year and Team MVP last season. She was also a standout soccer player and was named team MVP of the soccer team last season as well.
Odenbach, a forward from Penfield, N.Y. earned mention as an All-State and AAU Junior Olympic Team selection.
Scully, a forward/midfielder from Ossining, N.Y. was an All-State selection and participated in the Empire State Games.
Lizzy Peijs, a midfielder/back from Breda, Holland, where she attended the University of Tilburg, will enroll at UConn with four years of eligibility remaining. Peijs plays for the First Division Breda Women’s Team.
Odenwaelder, who joins her twin sister Jessica at UConn, played for Fairfield University in 2003. She played in all 20 games for FU at the midfield position last season. Odenwaelder was a First Team All-State selection her junior and senior years at Womago High School in Goshen, Conn.
