AUSTIN, TX (June 8) - Two University of Connecticut women’s track and field athletes will be competing beginning Wednesday, June 9 at the NCAA Division I Track & Field Championships in Austin, Texas. Seniors Deirdre Mullen (Princeton, N.J.) and Amy Parkosewich (Bethlehem, Conn.) have both qualified to take part, with Mullen looking to garner her fourth All-America honor in the high jump, and Parkosewich looking for her first in the discus.
Mullen recently broke her own school record at the NCAA East Regional, clearing a height of 1.88 meters (6-2) to place second. The mark ranks in a tie for the fourth-best in the country this season among Division I female athletes.
Mullen has earned all three of her current All-America honors at NCAA Indoor Championships, and is making only her second appearance at an outdoor championship. During the 2001-02 season she qualified for the meet and placed 12th with a mark of 1.75 meters (5-8.75), and she did not compete at all for UConn in the 2002-03 outdoor season.
Parkosewich is making her first-ever appearance at an NCAA Championship, and is going into the meet with the 18th-best discus throw in the country this season. Her top qualifying mark of 52.86 meters (173-5) earned her second place at the ECAC Championships on May 14, and also broke her own UConn school record.
Updated Schedule: Due to inclement weather in Austin, both athletes will now be competing only in finals of their events. The qualifying rounds have been cancelled. Parkosewich will compete in the discus at 11:00 a.m. (CST) on Friday, June 11, and Mullen will take part in the finals of the high jump at 7:30 p.m. (CST) on the same day.
