Highsmith Takes First At URI Pentathlon

KINGSTON, R.I. (December 2, 2005) - Sophomore Tamara Highsmith (East Haven, Conn.) opened the indoor season for the University of Connecticut women's track and field team with a first place finish at the URI Pentathlon. Highsmith competed against 14 competitors to take first with 3,575 points. She won three of five individual events and placed no lower than third in the other two. Taking second place was Tiana Riel, who was unattached, with 3,435 points, followed by Cloe Harry of the University of New Hampshire with 2,919 points, Amy Roccio of UNH (2,889 pts.) and Katie Hoppe also of UNH (2,739 pts.).
Highsmith took first place in three individual events, including the the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.8, the high jump with a 1.66m (5-5.25) clearance and the shot put with a throw of 10.84m (35-6.75). She took second in the long jump with a distance of 5.20m (17-0.75) and third in the 800 with a time of 2:32.0.
The entire team will be in action on Saturday, Dec. 3 at the Brown Invitational.
