Huskies Fall To Bowling Green, 9-2, In Classic Championship

STORRS, Conn. (December 30, 2005) - The University of Connecticut men's hockey team fell to the Falcons of Bowling Green, 9-2, in the championship game of the 2005 Toyota UConn Hockey Classic. Senior captain Chris Uber (Ithaca, N.Y.) was named to the All-Tournament team for his hustle this weekend. The forward scored a goal in the first game of the tournament, helping lead the Huskies to a 3-0 victory over Army. The Huskies drop to 7-8-1 overall while the Falcons improve to 7-11-1.
The Falcons jumped out to an early start with three goals within the first eight minutes of the game. Derek Whitmore started it off at the 1:12 mark of the period with help from James Unger and Mike Nesdill. Just over five minutes later, BGSU captain Don Morrison scored with assists from Unger and Brett Pilkington. Brandon Svendsen scored the final goal of the period for the Falcons at the 7:39 mark with John Mazzei assisting on the play.
UConn would not go unheard from in the first stanza. Freshman Sean Erickson (Eden Prairie, Minn.) scored his first collegiate goal at the 9:30 mark. Fellow classmate Chris Myhro (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and junior Cole Koidahl (Minneapolis, Minn.) assisted on the play.
The game would remain in BGSU's hands until late in the third. The Falcons scored four more goals in the second period and two more in the third to total nine on the evening. The Huskies were silenced until the 15:41 mark, when junior Trevor Stewart (Elk River, Minn.) tallied his third goal of the season with help from seniors Aaron Kakepetum (Balmertown, Ont.) and Ryan Palmer (Groton, Mass.)
The Championship Trophy went to the Falcons of Bowling Green. This was their first appearance in the tournament. Sophomore Alex Foster took home the MVP trophy for the Classic. He accumulated four assists this weekend and put forth a great effort.
The Huskies will be back in action again on Friday, Jan. 6 at home against the Bentley Falcons. The game is slated for 7:05 p.m. at the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum on the Storrs Campus.
