Huskies Fall at No. 1 Northwestern, 22-6

EVANSTON, Ill. (April 3, 2005) – Allison Tyminski had a pair of goals in a losing effort as the University of Connecticut women’s lacrosse team fell by a 22-6 score today at No. 1 Northwestern’s Thomas Athletic Complex in Evanston, Ill. The Wildcats remain perfect at 10-0 on the year with the win while the Huskies dip to 6-3. It marked the first time that UConn has ever faced the nation’s top-ranked team in its nine-year women’s lacrosse history.
Northwestern raced out to an 8-0 lead over the game’s first 12 minutes before Tyminski netted her first of the day, from Jacqui Hamilton, at 16:18. Two more Wildcat tallies would precede Tracy Mullaney’s free position goal at 13:08 that made the score 10-2. Five more Wildcat goals though would keep a late first half comeback out of question for the Huskies, although Tyminski did tally on a free position with 11 seconds to play before half time. The second half saw the Huskies get goals from Dana Stewart, Shannon Burke and Robyn Pastuch, with Burke assisting on Pastuch’s second career strike. Northwestern’s seven second half goals helped account for the 22-6 final. Reflecting the Wildcats’ level of possession control (draws were 21-9 in Northwestern’s favor), only one of Northwestern’s 16 non-free position goals was scored unassisted. Kristen Kjellman had 11 points (five goals and six assists) to lead Northwestern. Laura Glassanos also scored five goals, while adding a trio of assists for the Wildcats.
Jennifer Wong made six saves in 41 minutes of time in goal for UConn. She allowed 19 goals. The other three goals were yielded by Kristen Haldeman who made one save in her 19 minutes of playing time. Ashley Gersuk played the first 48 minutes in net for Northwestern, making five saves and allowing five goals while Meredith Philipp played the final 12 minutes, making one save and allowing a goal.
The loss also snapped UConn’s school record road winning streak at eight games. UConn’s last road loss prior to today was on March 27, 2004 against No. 9 Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. UConn will return to action on Wednesday night when the Huskies play host to Boston College at 7:00 p.m.
