KINGSTON, R.I. (January 20, 2006) - The University of Connecticut men's track and field team captured the team title at the Sorlein Memorial Invitational at the University of Rhode Island on Friday with 205.5 points. Brown was second with 109 points, host URI was third with 92 points, Maine took fourth with 62.5 points and Providence rounded out the top-five with 47 points.
Eight Huskies captured individual titles at the meet, UConn's first team scoring meet of the season. Senior captain Joel Legare (Holden, Mass.) took first in the 800m in 1:51.66, followed closely behind by fellow senior Logan Jones (Dorchester, Mass.) in 1:51.82. Junior Max Feldman (Easton, Conn.) captured the 3000m in a time of 8:21.52 and sophomore Steve Iannaccone (Toms River, N.J.) was second in the 1000m in 2:25.98. All of those times qualified them for the BIG EAST Championships.
Also shining for the Huskies was junior Basil Campbell (Ewing, N.J.), who won the 55m hurdles, his specialty, in a time of 7.58. Freshman Marquis Thomas (Mattapan, Mass.) continued to impress with a second place finish in the high jump with a jump of 2.01m. Fellow freshman Anthony Pomo (Saddle Brook, N.J.) also continued to shine for the Huskies, capturing the long jump with a jump of 6.90m and taking second in the 55m dash in a time of 6.50. Junior Jake Radzevich (Hampstead, N.H.) captured the title in the pole vault in 4.88m while classmate Jonas TePaske (Freehold, N.J.) was second in 4.57m.
Senior captain Mark Godoy (Amityville, N.Y.) returned from illness to capture the triple jump title at the meet with a jump of 14.36m. That distance was good enough to qualify for the BIG EAST Championship and narrowly missed out on being first on the qualifying list. Sophomore Andrew Dubs (Holland, Pa.) captured the shot put title with a throw of 16.14m and senior Aaron Isaacs (Danbury, Conn.) solidified his hold on the second-best result in the BIG EAST with a throw of 17.66m in the weight throw, good enough for the title.
Said Head Coach Greg Roy, "While this was a decisive win in a meet that we did not finish well at last year, it pointed out what we need to do as much as what we have done. There were some excellent individual performances today, but everyone will need to be ready in order to put forth the effort necessary to compete for a BIG EAST Indoor Championship."
The Huskies are next in action on Friday, January 27 when they travel to New York, N.Y. for the BIG EAST-Ivy League Challenge.
