STORRS, Conn. (December 20, 2006) - University of Connecticut head football coach Randy Edsall announced on Wednesday the signing of quarterback Tyler Lorenzen (Eddyville, Iowa) to a National Letter of Intent to play for the Huskies. Lorenzen will enroll at UConn in January for spring semester classes after spending the past year at Palomar Community College in San Marcos, Calif. (near San Diego), where he earned All-America honors.
"I'm very excited that Tyler is going to join the UConn program," Edsall says. "I am looking forward to him being here in January to get his academic program in motion and also to be involved with our team both in the weight room and on the field, something which will enable him to compete for the starting quarterback position. He is a talented athlete who has very good arm strength, good feet and all of the intangibles that you look for in a quarterback. His athletic ability and his understanding of the game, plus the intangibles, is what attracted us to him. I am very happy that he chose the University of Connecticut."
In 2006, Lorenzen completed 229 of his 332 passes (69.0-percent) for 2,960 yards, throwing for 26 touchdowns against only three interceptions for a 167.90 efficiency rating. He also carried the ball 134 times for 836 yards with eight touchdowns. He had four 300-yard passing games last year to guide the Comets’ offense which averaged 467.7 yards per game and 40.0 points per game. He was named a first-team J.C. GridWire All-American for his efforts and was the Mission Conference American Division Offensive Player of the Year.
Carrying a 4.0 grade point average as a business major, Lorenzen was also named as an honorable mention pick on the J.C. Grid-Wire Scholar/Athlete Community College All-America team. Palomar went 6-5 in 2006, earning a No. 24 national ranking and a berth in the California Community College Playoffs.
Lorenzen originally signed with Iowa State in Feb. of 2005 after having an All-State senior season at quarterback at Eddyville-Blakesburg High School. He never played for ISU as the Cyclones switched him to wide receiver, leading Lorenzen to transfer to Palomar and return to his natural quarterback role.
