TOWSON, Md. (March 10, 2006) - Shannon Burke (Camillus, N.Y.) and Kristin Link (Slingerlands, N.Y.) each tallied three goals on the night, but No. 16-ranked Towson was not deterred as the Tigers defeated the University of Connecticut women’s lacrosse team, 16-13, Friday evening at Johnny Unitas Stadium. With the loss, the Huskies fall to 0-3 on the season, while Towson improves to a flawless 4-0 mark.
Becky Trumbo and Shannon Witzel scored five goals apiece for the Tigers, accounting for over 60 percent of the team’s total offense.
Towson jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the first eight minutes of play before Bonnie Levin (Rose Valley, Pa.) opened scoring for the Huskies at 21:12 off a pass from Whitney Michele (East Rochester, N.Y.). The Tigers increased their lead to four at 18:15, but the Huskies netted five of the next six goals to send the teams into the half with an even 7-7 ledger. Burke hit two of her shots during that period, finding the back of the net less than a minute after the preceding draw on both of her unassisted tallies.
The second half opened with the two teams going neck and neck for much of the first eight minutes of play. Towson pulled ahead twice, but the Huskies quickly leveled the score with goals from Tori Joel (Bel Air, Md.) and Link to even things up at 9-9 with 23:35 to play. The Tigers regained the lead off one of Trumbo’s goals and would not relinquish the advantage for the remainder of the contest.
UConn would pull within two goals on three occasions down the stretch, but it was never able to close the gap. Clare Schwan (Albany, N.Y.) scored her first goal of the season off a free position opportunity, while Burke and Link completed their hat tricks late in the second period. Kristen Haldeman (Malvern, Pa.) finished the night with 10 saves, including six in the second half.
The Huskies return to action Wednesday, March 15, with a 3:00 p.m. contest at Harvard.
