STORRS, Conn. (August 22) – Third-year head coach Bill Morgan has released the 2006-07 indoor and outdoor schedules for the University of Connecticut women’s track and field teams. After a successful 2006 season in which multiple champions at the BIG EAST, New England and ECAC Championships were crowned, the Huskies are poised to make 2006-07 a year that will continue the standard of excellence.
“The staff is excited to present the most challenging and comprehensive schedule to our student-athletes,” Morgan said. “Along with the traditional, regional meets we have enhanced our opportunities to compete against the best in the nation by traveling to Georgia Tech, Miami, Tennessee, and Penn State.”
The 2006 indoor schedule provides opportunity to compete with some of the nation’s best teams. The Huskies open at the season at the Brown Invitational on December 3. The following weekend, select athletes will travel to Kingston, R.I. to take part at the University of Rhode Island Pentathlon on December 8.
Continuing in 2007, UConn will compete at the Army Invitational on January 13 followed by the Great Dane Classic on January 19 held at the N.Y. Armory.
“Returning to the Armory (N.Y.) and some of the finest tracks in the country, we will be able to get the word out on University of Connecticut Track & Field as our young ladies display their talents,” Morgan said.
The Huskies will then travel to the Greater Boston Invitational on January 21 followed by the always competitive Penn State Open on January 26-27. The Yale Invitational on February 2-3 and St. Valentine Invitational on February 9 will provide the final tune-ups before the BIG EAST Championships take place February 17-18 in Akron, Ohio. UConn will then look to defend its title from a year ago at the New England Championships in Boston, Mass., February 23-24. The ECAC Championships mark the close of the indoor season on March 3-4 in Boston, Mass.
The 2007 outdoor season kicks off on March 17 with the Huskies getting their first taste of competition of the season at the Miami Invitational in Miami, Fla. UConn will compete at the Army Invitational in West Point, N.Y. on March 24 before heading south again for the Georgia Tech Invitational in Atlanta, Ga., on March 31.
The Huskies return home to host the UConn Invitational on April 7 in Storrs, Conn. Hitting the road once again the team will race at the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn., April 13-14 before hosting the UConn ‘Select’ Invitational on April 21.
The team will compete at the Penn Relays, April 26-28 and then on April 29 at the Brown Invitational in Providence, R.I.
UConn will once again host the BIG EAST Championships that will take place May 4-6 in Storrs, Conn. The following weekend the Huskies take part at the ECAC Championships May 11-13 in Princeton, N.J. to wrap up the season.
“With a national level freshmen class joining our returnees, the exposure will be critical to improved performances with the goal of reaching the national championships,” Morgan said. “Obviously, our position to attract other top student-athletes will be rewarded. We ask all our friends of women’s track and field – donors, alumni, and entire university community – to follow us for a most exciting year.”
