No. 14 Men's Basketball Falls At LSU, 66-49

BATON ROUGE, La. (January 6, 2007)— All-American Glen Davis scored 16 points and added eight rebounds to lead Louisiana State University to a 66-49 men’s basketball win over the University of Connecticut Saturday in front of 13,121 at the Maravich Center.
With the loss, UConn falls to 12-2 on the year, while LSU improves to 11-3 with the victory.
The Huskies shot only 31.6 percent from the field and were 11-of-24 (45.8 percent) from the free throw line for the contest and turned the ball over 11 times in the second half
Freshman Jerome Dyson (Rockville, Md.) led the Husky effort with 12 points, while sophomore Marcus Johnson (Los Angeles, Calif.) added eight points and seven boards. Tasmin Mitchell also finished with 16 points and added ten boards for the Tigers.
The second half saw plenty of miscues by both squads, as the Tigers took advantage of Husky turnovers to take a ten-point lead. UConn then failed to cut into that lead on several occasions despite good opportunities to do so down the stretch. The lead was ten, 46-36, with 9:24 to play after a timeout by the Huskies. A follow dunk by Stanley Robinson (Birmingham, Ala.) cut the lead to eight, 46-38, with 7:59 to play, but LSU got a pair of offensive rebounds on the next possession and Davis capitalized with a conventional three-point play to increase the lead to 11 points, 49-38, with under seven minutes to go.
Robinson again tried to spark the Huskies, making a lay-up and then Jonathan Mandeldove (Stone Mountain, Ga.) tipped in a basket, cutting the lead back to seven points, 49-42, in less than a minute span. The lead was eight, 51-43, with just under five minutes to go, but A.J. Price (Amityville, N.Y.) turned the ball over and Garrett Temple went the length of the floor for a lay-up and one, getting the advantage back to 11 points, 54-43. A Husky miss and a scramble for the rebound resulted in another LSU fast-break and Mitchell made a put-back to make the lead 13 points, the biggest of the game to that point, 56-43, with 4:08 to go in the contest. UConn would never get closer than 11 points the rest of the way.
The Huskies turned the ball over six times in just over five minutes to start the second half and fell behind by eight, 40-32, with 14:39 to play in the contest. Dyson responded on the next possession with a huge three to cut the lead back to five. The Huskies had several chances over the next few minutes to capitalize on Tiger miscues, but saw lay-up attempts by Jeff Adrien (Brookline, Mass.) and Curtis Kelly (Queens, N.Y.) rim out. The lead grew to nine, 44-35, with just over 12 minutes to play in the contest.
UConn led the entire first half until Tack Minor beat the buzzer with a three to give the Tigers a 30-28 lead at the break, their first lead of the game. The Huskies had led by as many as nine points in the half, jumping out to a 15-6 lead. The lead was eight, 24-16, but the Tigers used a 9-2 run to cut the lead to one at 26-25, the closest they had been since the opening minutes.
The Huskies held the edge on the backboards in the half at 24-20, but shot only 33.3 percent from the field, making one three-pointer. LSU shot 35.5 percent in the half and made three three’s in the stanza. The Huskies got off to a fantastic start in the contest, scoring the game’s first seven points and forcing an early LSU timeout. The lead grew to 9-2 before the Tigers responded to cut the deficit to 9-6 at the first media timeout.
UConn returns to action Wednesday, January 10 with a 7:00 p.m. contest against Marquette University at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs.
