STORRS, Conn. (December 30, 2007) - The University of Connecticut men's hockey team fell 5-0 to Ferris State in the championship of the 15th annual Toyota UConn Hockey Classic. UConn falls to 5-10-1 on the year, while the Bulldogs improve to 9-8-1.
The Huskies best chance to score came 10 minutes into the second period after Adam Welch was called for high sticking. Down 2-0, UConn came out firing trying to cut into the Ferris State lead. Both Chris Myhro (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and Matt Turner (Colorado Springs, Colo.) had open shots on net, but both times Bulldog goalie Mitch O'Keefe came up with the save.
For the second straight game Beau Erickson (Hinton, Iowa) was strong in net as he stopped a new season high 35 shots. He made several diving saves during the first two periods including one with 1:05 to go in the second, stopping a shot in mid-air that was heading into the net high and to his left. Ferris State was then able to break the game open in the third with three goals that helped them clinch the 2007 title.
For the game Myhro and Ryan Hawkins (Eden Prairie, Minn.) led the team with four shots each. Brian Riley scored a hat trick for Ferris State, and was named the tournament's MVP. Nick Schneider (Maplewood, Minn.) was named to the All-Tournament team for UConn.
In the consolation game earlier in the afternoon, Army and Brown played to a 1-1 tie.
The Huskies return to action on January 2 when they travel to Yale for a non-conference tilt. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
