INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (February 28, 2008) - Senior Jaclyn Hawkins (Manotick, Ont.) has been selected as one of the participants for the third annual Frozen Four Skills Challenge, which will be held April 11 at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colo.
Hawkins was chosen among some of the top Division I women's ice hockey athletes in the country and earned a spot on the eight-person East team, along with two fellow Hockey East skaters. New Hampshire's Martine Garland and Jennifer Hitchcock both were selected for the East team and will join Hawkins in Denver in April.
To be eligible for the skill challenge, all players must have exhausted their collegiate eligibility and be nominated by their head coach. The original list of players was at 166 individuals and was cut down to 66 by the selection committee. After a week of electronic voting by fans, the final players were selected by representatives from the American Hockey Coaches Association, the NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Committee and the NCAA National office staff.
The skills challenege will include competitions such as a puck control relay, fastest skater, hardest shot, rapid fire shooting, accuracy shooting and penalty shot.
Hawkins, the Huskies' leader in career points, goals scored and assists, has led the UConn program the past four seasons by making her team one of the elite teams in the country. Hawkins is currently leading the Huskies with 26 assists this season while adding 14 goals for a team second-best 40 points. Her 69 career goals and 74 career assists, makes her the most successful UConn women's ice hockey player in the program's eight-year history.
Tickets for this event will go on sale March 1 at the Pepsi Center box office and on Ticketmaster.com. The Frozen Four Skills Challenge will begin at 7:00 p.m. MST and will be preceded by the Hobey Baker Memorial Award at 5:30 p.m. and the Hockey Humanitarian Award at 6:05 p.m. The skills challenge will be shown live on ESPNU.
