STORRS, Conn. - Behind the three-point effort of senior captain Michael Coppola (Old Brookeville, N.Y.), the University of Connecticut men's hockey team took down the Royal Military College 7-2 in exhibition play at the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum Saturday.
Six different Huskies scored in the victory while three UConn players recorded multi-point games.
The second period was the difference maker for the Huskies as UConn outscored the Paladins 4-1.
Junior Jeff Sapieha (Calgary, Alberta) started things off for the Huskies notching the first point of the game at 10:56 in the first period. After junior Chris Spicer (Syracuse, N.Y.) dug the puck out of the corner and dished it to Coppola, the senior sent a pass to Sapieha and he smashed a shot past the RMC goaltender for the first goal of the game.
The Paladins would tie things up before the end of the first period though after Ken Morin recorded a goal at 14:35 sending the game tied into the first intermission.
The Huskies dominated the second period outscoring the Royal Military College 4-1. Sophomore Marcello Ranallo (Burnaby, B.C.) recorded the first goal of the period with some help from the returning 2008-09 assist leader Jason Krispel (Cypress, Calif.) and Andrew Olson (Alexandria, Minn.).
Junior Brian Reagan (Ballwin, Mo.) knocked in the only power play goal of the game for the Huskies just a couple of minutes later at 4:08. Reagan's goal was aided by his classmate Justin Hernandez (Farmington Hills, Mich.) and Olson.
At the nine minute mark, the Huskies tallied two goals in a matter of seven seconds. First, Coppola blasted in his first goal of the game at 9:35. Off of the faceoff after the goal, rookie Jim Gallagher (Marquette, Mich.) gathered up the puck off of a couple passes from sophomore Dan Naurato (Livonia, Mich.) and freshman Sean Ambrosie (Moorhead, Minn.) and knocked in a goal of his own at 9:42.
RMC tallied a goal before the end of the period to cut the lead to three. But it just wasn't enough as UConn came out in the third period to score a couple more goals giving the Huskies a five-goal lead and the victory.
In the third, Coppola recorded his second goal of the game while freshman Alex Gerke (Tomah, Wisc.) also knocked one in for the Huskies.
UConn will begin their regular season on October 16 when they travel to Ferris State to take on the Bulldogs in Big Rapids, Mich.
