BUFFALO, N.Y. - In already their seventh road game of the season, the University of Connecticut men's hockey team rallied to a 4-4 tie against Canisius at the Buffalo State Sports Arena in front of a crowd of 638.
Nine Huskies recorded a point in the victory and junior assistant captain Jason Krispel (Cypress, Calif.) and freshman Sean Ambrosie (Moorhead, Minn.) each tallied two points on the night. For the second game in a row, Ambrosie recorded a multi-point game, both of the double assist variety.
Rookie Jeff Larson was solid in goal tying his career-high of 33 saves on the night in his 65 minutes in goal. Dan Morrison was his counterpart in goal for Canisius making 20 saves on night and also allowing four goals.
The Huskies went ahead with less than 10 minutes left in the final period of the game but Canisius tallied two goals in less than a minute's time to regain the lead with 6:28 remaining in the game. Senior Brendan Olinyk (Wisconsin Rapids, Wisc.) netted the game-tying goal with 2:45 remaining to force overtime and help the Huskies to record a point in their third-straight game.
Senior captain Michael Coppola (Old Brookville, N.Y.) got the Huskies on the board first for the third-straight game when he recorded his first goal of the season with some help from junior Jeff Sapieha (Calgary, Alberta). Coppola's goal was the only one of the first period giving the Huskies the early lead.
Canisius' Ryan Klusendorf netted a goal at the very end of the second period at 19:23 to tie the game at one-all entering the final period of play, where all of the action happened on the night.
In the third, the Griffs went up by one when their leading scorer Cory Conacher tallied his sixth goal of the season early into the third period. Krispel scored his first goal on the season at 6:56 in the third to retie the game up at two-all.
UConn was able to go ahead when junior assistant captain Andrew Olson (Alexandria, Minn.) netted his third goal of the year to regain the lead for the Huskies, but Canisius would not back down. Dave Kostuch and Scott Moser recorded goals at 12:47 and 13:28 in the third taking the lead away from the Huskies for the second time during the game.
But Olinyk wouldn't quit either as he fired in his first goal of the season to tie things up and force an overtime period where the Huskies fended off the Canisius attack and keep their undefeated streak alive.
Freshman defender Alex Gerke (Tomah, Wisc.) and Olson have now recorded a point in three-straight games and five out of the last six games.
The Huskies return to action Sunday afternoon when they finish out their series in Buffalo against Canisius on Sunday, November 15 at 3:05 p.m.
