Celebrating 50 Years of UConn Men's Hockey

STORRS, Conn. - During the 2009-10 season, the University of Connecticut men's hockey team will be celebrating its 50th anniversary as a varsity program. What began in 1960-61 as a Division III team has evolved into a Division I championship squad with over 400 alumni.
The Huskies kicked off the celebration of its 50th year this fall during the weekend of Sept. 12-13. The weekend began with a pre-game reception at the football game vs. North Carolina at Rentschler Field on Saturday, Sept. 12. Returning alumni were honored on the field in front of the Rentschler Field crowd during an in-game ceremony before returning to Storrs for a dinner at the Rome Commons Ballroom.
On Sunday, the weekend wrapped up with an open house at the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum where former members were taken on a tour of the facility that opened for the 1998-99 season.
"The celebration was truly a spectacular event," said Head Coach Bruce Marshall, a part of the UConn Men's Hockey program for over 25 years. "It was very well attended by the alumni of the program and it was exciting to see many of the different eras of the program cross paths. You could see that everyone that was there all had the same respect and passion for the UConn Hockey program."
The season starts for the 2009-10 Huskies with an exhibition game against the Royal Military College at Freitas Ice Forum on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 7:05 p.m. They will host their home opener a month later when they take on American International in an Atlantic Hockey match on Nov. 6.
