Volleyball Falls in Three Sets at Dayton on Friday

DAYTON, Ohio - In its first match of the Dayton Flyer Classic, the University of Connecticut volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-22, 25-16-25-16) to Dayton on Friday night. Freshman Mattison Quayle (Los Angeles, Calif.) led the Huskies with seven kills while senior Chauntay Mickens (Germantown, Md.) finished the match with six.
A pair of Flyers recorded 13 kills each to guide Dayton to its seventh-consecutive victory of the 2009 season. Both Lindsay Fletemier and Tiffany Gaerke posted a .500 hitting-percentage while tallying their 13 kills.
Once again it was a balanced defensive effort for Connecticut as six players had at least one block assist with Mickens had another solid outing with three block assists to lead the team. Freshman Cayla Broadwater (Williamsport, Md.) contributed two block assists while sophomore Allison Nickel finished the match with one block solo and a block assist.
Newcomers Samantha Arriaran (Norco, Calif.) and Keeley Abram (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) had 12 and eight assists, respectively.
The Huskies (3-6) resume play with two matches on Saturday against a pair of teams they have never faced in volleyball before. First up for UConn is Creighton at 1 p.m. followed by a 5 p.m. match against Samford.
Game Notes
- Connecticut is now 0-3 against Dayton in the all-time series.
- Among the UConn starters, Allison Nickel was 1-for-3 in total attempts against the Flyers marking the sixth time this season that she has not committed a hitting error.
- The last time the Huskies lost a three-set decision this season they won the next match 3-0.
