STORRS, Conn. - Freshman Mattison Quayle (Los Angeles, Calif.) led the University of Connecticut volleyball team to a 3-0 victory over DePaul on Sunday. Quayle recorded a match-high 15 kills as the only player to notch double-figures at Harry A. Gampel Pavilion. The win evens the Huskies' BIG EAST record to 1-1 while their overall record moves to 8-9 this season.
DePaul falls to 6-10 overall with an 0-2 mark in conference play after falling in three-set match to UConn.
After trailing by five (7-2), the Huskies rallied to tie the set 11-11 forcing the Blue Demons to call a time out. DePaul tied the set again (14-14) and UConn responded with a seven-point run with freshman Kelsey Maving (Tonawanda, N.Y.) at the baseline. Maving contributed an ace while it was several hitting errors by the Blue Demons that left UConn leading 20-15. DePaul closed the deficit in a comeback attempt that fell short in the Huskies 25-21 first-set win.
The Blue Demons scored the first point of the second set only to find the Huskies respond with six-straight, including a pair of kills from sophomore Jordan Kirk (Plano, Texas) and another from Quayle. UConn used a balanced defensive effort en route to its commanding 25-15 victory over the Blue Demons to lead the match 2-0. Kirk totaled six kills in the match.
Although DePaul tied the set (6-6) after the Huskies relinquished an early lead they pulled away to a three-point edge (16-13) and continued to find their hitting game against the Blue Demons. Quayle tallied nine of her 15 kills in the third set including three in a four-point run for the 23-14 Husky lead. UConn closed the set out to win 25-16 and secure its first BIG EAST victory of the season.
Senior Jessica Isaac (Erlanger, Ky.) finished the match with 16 digs while seven other Huskies had at least two in the match. Quayle and Maving finished the day with seven and six, respectively.
Volleyball returns to the road for a pair of BIG EAST matches at South Florida on Oct. 2 and Georgetown on Oct. 4. The Huskies match against the Bulls is set to begin at 7 p.m. while Sunday's tilt against the Hoyas will start at 2 p.m.
