STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut men's hockey team fell 4-0 to RIT on Friday at the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum. RIT recorded at least one goal in each period as Alan Mazur aided on three of the four goals on the night.
With the loss, the Huskies drop to 2-16-3 on the year, 2-11-3 in Atlantic Hockey action while RIT improves to 12-8-1 on the year and 12-2-1 in AHA play.
RIT started things off very early in the first when, after tallying the first penalty of the game, Mazur knocked a pass to Mark Cornacchia who went end-to-end with the puck scoring a shorthanded goal for the Tigers just 1:53 into the game.
It looked as though sophomore Dan Naurato (Livonia, Mich.) had tied up the game midway through the first period but his shot ricocheted off of the pipe going in and out of the goal quickly and bouncing out into play.
The Huskies were able to kill off a five-on-three power play opportunity, but in the second period the Tigers put another goal on the board, on another power play opportunity. Stevan Matic got the man-up goal with some assistance from Mazur and Sean Murphy.
In the third, RIT battled to put another goal on the board as freshman goaltender Garrett Bartus (St. Charles, Ill.) managed to stop a barrage of shots, but it was Mazur again that picked up the rebound and flipped it to Tyler Mazzei who recorded the wrap around goal at 1:55.
With just a few minutes remaining in the game, UConn pulled Bartus trying to take advantage of a six on four opportunity as RIT had a man in the penalty box. The Tigers were able to fight off UConn's attack as Brent Alexin notched an empty net goal to seal the victory.
Bartus finished the night with 27 saves, the majority coming in the third period. UConn killed off eight of their 10 man down situations but were unable to take advantage of any of their eight power play chances.
The Huskies are back in action on Saturday, January 16 when they finish out their weekend series with RIT at 7:05 at the Freitas Ice Forum.
