BURLINGTON, Vt. - The No. 9 University of Connecticut women's ice hockey team surpassed Vermont at Gutterson Fieldhouse with a 4-1 win. For the second-consecutive game a player recorded three points and on Sunday it was sophomore Monique Weber (Rogers, Minn.) contributing a goal and a pair of assists to the Huskies effort in Hockey East play.
Weber led five UConn players who got on the scoresheet with three points while also winning 10 of 15 at the face-off circle.
Senior captain Amy Hollstein (Pembroke, Mass.) got things started for the Huskies with an assist from Weber a mere 21 seconds into the game. Hollstein capitalized on the first goal of the game after Weber won the initial draw. The remainder of the first period was relatively quiet with UConn holding a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal.
It was not until late in the second period when either team was able to get on the board again. In the final three minutes of the second period three goals were scored, the first two by Connecticut. Junior Jennifer Chaisson (Cumberland, Ont.) tallied her second goal against the Catamounts in the series with an assist from freshman Kelly Horan (Methuen, Mass.) at 17:13. Less than a minute later, Weber hit the back of the net for the Huskies 3-0 edge.
Senior Michelle Binning (Oshawa, Ont.) tacked on her seventh helper of the season to Weber's 10th goal of the year. Vermont's Chelsea Furlani converted a power-play opportunity with just over 30 seconds remaining in the second period to cut the Catamount deficit (3-1).
Both teams finished with a power-play goal as Binning got one past Kristen Olychuck at 6:08 in the third period. UConn went on to win it 4-1 and move to 13-6-5 overall with a 4-3-4-1 mark in conference play. The Catamounts fall to 6-16-1 and 1-9-1 in the Hockey East on the year.
The Huskies held the Catamounts to 19 shots on goal while registering 31 shots on goal themselves. Olychuck finished the game with 27 stops while sophomore Alexandra Garcia (Pointe-Claire, Que.) made 18 saves on the day.
UConn returns to Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum with a pair of games against Maine on Friday at 7 p.m. and on Saturday at 4 p.m. Saturday's game is the Huskies' annual Skating Strides Against Breast Cancer event where they will present the Hockey East with the money they have raised thus far. Women's ice hockey will also wear pink jerseys for the weekend finale.
