PRINCETON, N.J. - Behind Eric Meland's three goals, Princeton took a 8-1 decision from the University of Connecticut men's hockey team in a Monday night contest. Meland finished the night with a power play, a shorthanded and an even-strength goal.
Sophomore Daniel Naurato (Livonia, Mich.) recorded the Huskies' lone goal of the night. Naurato's goal came in the second period and was of the shorthanded variety.
With the loss, the Huskies drop to 4-18-3 on the year while Princeton improves to 7-10-2 on the year.
Princeton used a 3-for-8 effort on power plays to help seal the victory while the Huskies were 0-for-5 on the night with a man-up opportunity.
The Tigers were the first to get on the board when Mark Magnowski got the puck into the back of the net at 6:14. The Tigers would go on to score another three goals in the first period at the 8:16, 13:16 and 17:28 marks. Two of the four period goals were recorded by Eric Meland.
In the second, Princeton didn't waste any time adding to their lead by scoring their fifth goal of the night just 14 seconds into the period. But the Huskies cut into that lead just five minutes later Naurato recorded his second goal of the year and first of the short handed kind. Naurato was aided by freshman Sean Ambrosie (Moorhead, Mich.). The duo has currently recorded points in back-to-back games.
The scored remained the same for the rest of the period but with seconds remaining in the second, Princeton tacked on their sixth goal of the game when Michael Sdao notched his second of the night.
Princeton got their seventh goal of the game just over a minute into the final period of play as Cam McIntyre got his second goal of the night. Meland earned a hattrick at 4:59 in the third extending the Princeton lead to seven.
Connecticut split the time in goal as freshman Garrett Bartus (St. Charles, Ill.) got the start playing over 40 minutes in goal, making 24 saves and allowing seven goals. Junior Brad McInnis (Anchorage, Alaska) came in relief of Bartus finishing with one goal allowed and 16 saves in just over 19 minutes of play.
The Huskies are back in action on Friday night when they open up a weekend series at the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum against Sacred Heart. The puck will drop at 7:05 p.m.
