STORRS, Conn. - In a back-and-forth game, Sacred Heart ended with the advantage as Erik Boisvert scored the game-winner 1:45 into the overtime period as the University of Connecticut men's hockey team fell 4-3 at the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum, Friday.
UConn had two players record multi-point efforts on the night as Jason Krispel (Cypress, Calif.) and Chris Waterstradt (Tulsa, Okla.) each had two points. Both of Krispel's points came on assists while Waterstradt had a goal and an assist on the night.
Sacred Heart extends its unbeaten streak to 11 games going 9-0-2 during that period as they improve to 12-9-4 on the year and 10-6-6 in Atlantic Hockey action. The Huskies drop to 4-19-3 on the season and 4-13-3 in AHA play.
UConn was the first team to get on the board when Justin Hernandez (Farmington Hills, Mich.) scored his third goal of the season. After Andrew Olson (Alexandria, Mich.) dished the puck down the ice, Krispel picked up the loose puck and sent a pass across to Hernandez who flicked it into the goal for the early lead at 8:39 in the first.
Sacred Heart tied things up at 11:07 when Patrick Knowlton knocked in his seventh goal of the season with some help from Dave Jarman who notched his 25th assist of the year. Just over a minute later, at 12:33 the Pioneers went up a goal as Nick Johnson recorded his 20th goal of the year aided by Jarman and Knowlton to give SHU a 2-1 lead entering the first intermission.
After killing back-to-back penalties that saw a five-on-three SHU advantage, the Huskies evened things out at two-all in the second. Tom Janosz (Elma, N.Y.) started things off for the Huskies getting the puck out of their defensive third. Waterstradt dished a pass up the ice that bounced off of the boards to Michael Coppola (Old Brookville, N.Y.) who streaked up the ice flipping his fourth goal of the year past SHU goaltender Steven Legatto at 5:54.
Before the end of the period, the Pioneers took the lead once again this time when Matt Gingera snuck the puck by UConn's goaltender Garrett Bartus (St. Charles, Ill.) for the one-goal lead entering the final period of play.
The Huskies bounced back yet again in the third as Waterstradt recorded his first career multi-point effort this time scoring the game tying goal at 9:44. Waterstradt was helped out by Krispel who notched his first multi-assist game since recording three helpers at American International on Feb. 17, 2009 and James Gallagher (Marquette, Mich.).
UConn fought off a late SHU power play to send the game into overtime, but at 1:45 into the extra time period, Boisvert scored the game-winner for Sacred Heart as they extended their unbeaten streak to 11.
Bartus finished the night with 26 saves in the goal making eight of those saves as the Pioneers had the man-advantage.
The Huskies are back in action on Saturday when they close out their season series with Sacred Heart. The time of the game has been pushed back due to a women's game early in the day and will begin at 7:35 p.m.
