The Week Ahead
The University of Connecticut women's ice hockey team opens a four-game road swing this weekend, traveling to the state of New York for a pair of contests. The Huskies will face Colgate on Friday (Oct. 15) at 7:00 p.m. and will then take on Syracuse, Saturday (Oct. 16) at 4:00 p.m.
Huskies On The Road
Last season the Huskies had much success on the road, posting an 11-6-3 record, including five consecutive road victories during the middle part of the season. UConn will look to continue that trend this season as they open their first road swing of the year, facing Colgate, Syracuse and Minnesota-Duluth in four straight road contests.
Blain Goes For Two
Sophomore Maude Blain recorded a goal and an assist in Saturday's game against Clarkson, marking the first time a Husky has posted two or more points in a game this season. It is also the third time for Blain to post two points in her career, tallying a goal and an assist against Robert Morris and two goals against Providence as a freshman.
Capitalizing On The Empty Net
Kelly Horan posted UConn's first empty net goal last Saturday against Clarkson since January 19, 2010 when teammate Jennifer Chaisson recorded one against Robert Morris. Horan's empty-netter is the 10th over the last five years, with the Huskies tallying three during 2008-09 and 2006-07, and one during 2009-10, 2007-08 and 2005-06.
Huskies On The Power Play
Maude Blain posted UConn's first power play goal of the year against Clarkson, scoring at the 2:19 mark of the first period against the Golden Knights. The goal was Blain's first of the season and the sixth of her career, including her third power play goal. Over the last five seasons the Huskies have posted 165 power play goals compared to 138 recorded by their opponents.
...And Limits Opponents This Season
For the first 165 minutes of the season the Huskies held their opponents scoreless on 10 power play opportunities, including four New Hampshire chances. St. Lawrence posted the first power play goal against the Huskies last Sunday (Oct. 17) when they capitalized on the man advantage during their final power play of the game.
New Faces
UConn's nine newcomers are making an immediate impact on the ice this season with five freshmen recording seven of UConn's 15 points over the first two weeks of action. Taylor Gross and Jocelyn Slattery have each posted a goal and an assist during the first three games, with Stephanie Raithby (1G), Jenny Saxon (1A) and Alexandra Vakos (1A) also tallying points.
Three-For-Three
With a goal against St. Lawrence and an assist against Clarkson last weekend, Jennifer Chaisson has now posted one point in every game this season and leads the Huskies with three points. After last weekend's games Chaisson is now fourth on the career assists chart with 45 helpers, and ranks seventh with 66 career points.
Garcia In Net
Alexandra Garcia posted back-to-back 34 save games last weekend, bringing her season total to 89 saves. It was the second time in her career that she has posted consecutive 30+ save games, also doing it against Providence and Boston University last season. Garcia's 89 saves ranks her third in the Hockey East, behind Maine's Brittany Ott and Providence's Genevieve Lacasse.
...And Continues To Improve Career Record
Garcia's 68 saves last weekend also brings her career save total to 953, fourth all-time in the UConn record book, needing just 47 saves to reach 1,000. Garcia would be the fourth Husky to post 1,000 saves in her career, joining Brittany Wilson, Shannon Murphy and Kaitlyn Shain.
