STORRS, Conn. - Rebecca Murray (Carmel, Ind.) posted her second consecutive double-double and led the UConn offense with 13 kills as the University of Connecticut volleyball team defeated Rutgers, 3-0 this afternoon in Gampel Pavilion. The win marks the first BIG EAST victory for the Huskies this season.
Set scores were 25-21, 29-27, 25-23.
Murray's 13 kills were a match-high, while her 14 digs came right behind teammate Kelsey Maving's (Tonawanda, N.Y.) match-high of 21.
The Huskies controlled the tempo in all three sets this afternoon, with their largest margin of victory coming during set one when they posted a 25-21 win. After being down 3-1, UConn went on a four-point run with a Jordan Kirk (Plano, Texas) kill, a Maving service ace and two Rutgers errors to take a 5-3 lead and never looked back. Shortly after, the Huskies posted five unanswered points on kills from Kirk and Angela Roidt (McFarland, Wis.) to extend their lead to five (10-5). Connecticut's lead grew from there and the Huskies put the set away with a Kirk kill, who ended with eight on the night.
The Scarlet Knights and the Huskies traded points throughout the entire second set, with the largest lead of the night coming for UConn at 23-20 when Murray recorded her seventh kill of the match. The Huskies had three set-points, and finally battled for the victory with a Morgan Freeman (Virginia Beach, Va.) service ace, her lone ace of the match.
During the final set the Huskies fought back from a three point deficit and regained the lead at 8-7 with a Murray kill and controlled play from there as Murray posted her 13th kill of the night for the match-winner.
Freeman led the Huskies with seven blocks on the night, including a season-high three solo blocks, while Kirk also added four.
Maving posted her seventh 20 + dig match of the season and also recorded a pair of service aces, while Murray continued her 16-match service ace streak with three on the afternoon.
Roidt posted 25 of UConn's 31 assists and tallied a career-high tying four kills for a career-high .571 hitting percentage.
The Huskies will return to action when they travel to DePaul and Notre Dame next weekend, facing the Blue Demons on Saturday (Oct. 30) at 3:00 p.m. EST and they will face the Fighting Irish on Sunday (Oct. 31) at 2:00 p.m.
