Hi, I'm Jody Sydor, Senior Captain of the Huskies and I am really excited to introduce the 2010/2011 women's ice hockey team in our first ever blog (Coach thinks she's so technologically advanced)! Even though we just officially started practicing as a team and have only been to school for 3 weeks, we've already done so much. It's been a brand new learning curve for our (eight!) freshmen, but all the returners certainly have welcomed back some pre-season traditions. My favourite of course, is always Christmas in September, the day when we receive more Nike apparel than I have room for in my closet! It was exciting to get a few different items this year, and the looks on the freshmen faces were priceless; they loved getting their new clothes and equipment. I think it's because they get to start looking like a true blue Husky.
Although the return to Coach Moe Butler and the field house makes us sore no matter how hard we work out in the summer, we were excited to get into our workouts and show how much we've improved, starting with the first week's fitness testing. Moe had a few surprises this year, and an early morning run through the woods certainly pushed everyone to their limits. The tree roots were huge, but everyone made it through in one piece to a nice early morning breakfast at the end. At our inter-squad Strongwoman competition it was a close battle with just one point separating the two teams at the end. We had some funny wipe-outs in that as well, and it was certainly hard work, but fun to compete with each other in events like the tire flip, sled pull, and "Move the Mountain." So far, the biggest surprise to me is that on the day our Team Triathlon was held, it didn't rain! For the first time ever, the weather held out, and the running, biking, and swimming were pleasant to do. "The Flintstones" team took first prize for best costumes, and there were some other first time victors as well.
Some team bonding highlights thus far have been, for the second and third year (respectively) in a row, team camping and the picnic at Patti's. Again we were graced by the presence of `The Sunshine Band' at camping, although they did look as though they were slowing down a bit in their old age! But they did remember us from last year, which I thought was pretty cool. We made t-shirts, danced, stared at the stars, and made delicious s'mores as well. At Patti's this past weekend, we were treated like royalty and got to enjoy fabulous steak, chicken, and chilli cheese fries. Of course, we supplied the dessert, and as we like to compete often, had a panel of judges pick their favourites. The funniest was when one group thought they had won, and celebrated loudly, much to their embarrassment! We played lots of outdoor games and had tons of fun, with a bonus being a choreographed dance from Murph and Carli (they were slightly bitter that they were cut from the school's glee club and needed to prove that they are actually very gleeful!).
Oh ya and add the fact that practice has started on top of all of that! But that's all for now, I'll let someone else tell you about the actual hockey part of our team!
