Durham, N.H. - Kelly Horan's (Methuen, Mass.) game-winning goal in the first period led the University of Connecticut women's ice hockey team past New Hampshire, 1-0 this afternoon at the Whittemore center. The Huskies handed UNH its first loss at home of the season and improves to 3-7-1 overall and 2-2-1 in WHEA play.
Horan's game-winner came at the 18th minute of the first period when Jennifer Chaisson (Cumberland, Ont.) and Taylor Gross (Colorado Springs, Colo.) found her with an open shot at the net. The goal was Horan's second of the season, while the assist was the fifth of the year for Chaisson and the third of the season for Gross.
Alexandra Garcia (Pointe-Claire, Que.) made 32 saves on the day en route to posting her first shutout of the season.
The Husky defense held off the Wildcats during the entire game, including a perfect 3-for-3 on the penalty kill. Four of Garcia's saves came during the final two minutes of the game when UNH pulled their goalie for the extra attacker. Despite the pressure from the skater-advantage, the Huskies were able to fend off the Wildcats as they came away with the 1-0 victory.
Sami Evelyn (Nepean, Ont.) and Brittany Murphy (Tewksbury, Mass.) led the Huskies with three shots on net during the game, while Alexandra Vakos (Hamden, Conn.), Gross and Horan each tallied two.
The Huskies will travel back to Storrs and face the Wildcats again tomorrow (Nov. 14) beginning at 1:00 p.m. in the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum.
