Men's Ice Hockey Tops Canisius, 3-2

STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut men's ice hockey team scored the first three goals of the game and held off a Canisius rally as the Huskies posted a 3-2 win in Atlantic Hockey action on Friday night. UConn improves to 2-1-2 on the season and 2-0-0 in the league while Canisius falls to 4-4-1 and 3-3-1 in Atlantic Hockey.
After a scoreless first period, UConn broke into the scoring column with two second period goals. Junior Marcello Ranalllo (Burnaby, B.C.) opened the scoring 7:16 into the second period with assists going to freshman Jordan Sims (Fort Wayne, Ind.). Senior Justin Hernandez (Farmington Hills, Mich.) scored UConn's second goal at 11:59 with assists going to senior Jason Krispel (Cypress, Calif.) and senior Andrew Olson (Alexandria, Va.).
UConn senior Brian Reagan (Ballwin, Mo.) scored a goal 1:40 into the third period to make it 3-0 Huskies but Canisius came right back as Ryan Bohrer scored 1:47 later to make it 3-1. Reagan's goal was assisted by sophomore defenseman Alex Gerke (Tomah, Wisc.) and redshirt sophomore Miles Winter (Horsham, Pa.). Canisius closed it to within one with a score by Vincent Scarsella, but the Huskies were able to hold on for the win.
The Huskies held a 29-26 shots on goals advantage while sophomore Garrett Bartus (St. Charles, Ill.) made 24 saves for the win in goal.
UConn and Canisius wrap up their two-game series with a 7:05 p.m. game on Saturday night at the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum in Storrs.
