STORRS, Conn. - Rebecca Murray (Carmel, Ind.) led the UConn offense with 10 kills as the Huskies swept USF in straight sets for the senior day victory this afternoon in Gampel Pavilion. The win marks the third BIG EAST victory of the season for the Huskies (5-18, 3-9) while the Bulls fall to 10-14 overall and 6-7 in the conference.
Set scores were 25-21, 25-20, 25-22.
Despite trailing much of the first set, the Huskies posted four unanswered points to take an 18-14 lead with an Angela Roidt (McFarland, Wis.) service ace and three USF errors. From there, UConn would hold its lead with kills from Cayla Broadwater (Williamsport, Md.), Jordan Kirk (Plano, Texas) and Roidt as the Huskies ended the set with a 25-21 victory.
USF jumped out to an early lead once again during set two, but the Huskies bounced back to take a 9-8 lead before going on a four-point run that gave UConn a 16-11 advantage. Morgan Freeman (Virginia Beach, Va.) dominated play during that stretch, recording one kill and two service aces to give Connecticut the lead. The Huskies controlled play during the rest of the set, eventually pulling away with a Murray kill and a Julia Hamer (Burlington, Ont.) service ace for the 2-0 UConn advantage.
The Huskies battled during the third frame, finally gaining an 18-17 advantage off of a Murray kill, her 10th of the night. The Bulls fought back to tie the match twice before UConn was able to post four unanswered points on a Mattison Quayle (Los Angeles, Calif.) kill and ace and a pair of USF errors for the 24-20 lead. UConn put the match away after forcing USF to commit another error, for the 25-22 set win.
Kirk posted nine total kills on the night, while Allison Nickel (Pittsford, N.Y.), Freeman, Quayle and Roidt combined for 10 kills.
Roidt also had 29 of UConn's 32 assists against USF, while Kelsey Maving (Tonawanda, N.Y.) had a team-high 12 digs.
The Huskies posted 12 service aces in the match, led by Freeman who had three. Murray, Kirk and Quayle each posted a pair, while Roidt, Maving and Hamer had the other three.
The Huskies will close out the regular season on the road, when they face Pittsburgh (Sat., Nov. 13) and West Virginia (Sun., Nov. 14) next weekend.
