Storrs, Conn. - The UConn men's hockey team hosted AHA foe Holy Cross in the second game of the Toyota UConn Hockey Classic at Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum tonight and advanced to the championship tomorrow with a 2-1 victory. UConn will face Princeton, 4-2 victors over Bowling Green in the first game, in the Championship at 7:15 p.m. Holy Cross and Bowling Green will play in the consolation at 4:00 p.m.
With the victory tonight, UConn improves to 6-7-3 (6-4-1 AHA) and jumps Holy Cross (6-8-2, 5-4-2 AHA) in the standings. UConn now sits in fifth place overall.
UConn came into the final period down, 1-0, and netted two third-period goals to come away with the victory. Senior Andrew Olson (Alexandria, Minn.) evened the score with his team-leading eighth goal of the season just 1:00 into third period. Olson buried a rebound after a shot from classmate Jason Krispel (Cypress, Calif.).
The final 20 minutes were back and forth with both teams exchanging chances until junior Corey Jendras (Abingdon, Md.) put home the game winner at 13:41. Senior Jeff Sapieha (Calgary, Alberta) won a face off back to Jendras at the top of the left face-off circle. Jendras quickly snapped a wrist shot over the goaltender's right shoulder, off the crossbar, and in to send UConn into the championship of the 18th Annual Toyota UConn Hockey Classic.
The goal was Jendras' second of the season with Sapieha earning his first assist of the year.
Holy Cross opened the scoring with a goal from Matt Clune at 10:29 of the first period.
Sophomore goaltender Garrett Bartus (St. Charles, Ill.) finished the game with 29 saves while Holy Cross netminder Thomas Tysowsky made 20 stops in the losing effort.
