Storrs, Conn. - It was announced on Monday, December 6 that UConn freshman Cole Schneider (Williamsville, N.Y.) has been named the Atlantic Hockey Association Co-Player and Co-Rookie of the Week. Schneider recorded a hat trick and added an assist to lead UConn to an 8-5 victory over Niagara on Saturday, December 4. Schneider shares the awards with Niagara freshman Scott Arnold.
Schneider was sensational for the Huskies on Saturday night. He became the first UConn player to net a hat trick since current senior Andrew Olson (Alexandria, Minn.) deposited three against Army on October 25, 2008. The rookie forward has been a consistent offensive threat for the Huskies all season. He currently leads the team with six goals while adding seven assists for a team-high 13 points.
It was also announced that freshman Billy Latta (West Chester, Pa.) and sophomore goaltender Garrett Bartus (St. Charles, Ill.) were named to the weekly AHA Honor Roll for their performances over the weekend.
Latta also recorded a four-point night for the Huskies in the 8-5 victory on Saturday. Latta scored two goals, including the game wining goal, and an assist on the night to double his season points total. On the year, Latta has recorded three goals and five assists for eight points.
Latta and Schneider became the first UConn players to register four-point nights since current senior Jason Krispel (Cypress, Calif.) recorded four assists in the victory over Army on October 25, 2008.
Bartus joins the Honor Roll after stopping 50 shots in the victory over Niagara on Saturday night. On Friday, Bartus denied 42 shots in a 4-3 overtime defeat to Niagara for a total of 92 saves on the weekend. Saturday marked the third time in his young career that Bartus has made 50 stops in a game.
