Huskies Travel To Union For Midweek Contest

STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut women's ice hockey team will once again take a break from Hockey East action and travel to Schenectady, N.Y. to face Union in a 7:00 p.m. match-up this Wednesday (Dec. 8). The game will mark the final contest for the Huskies before they go on a three week break from competition until the New Year.
Taylor Gross (Colorado Springs, Colo.) has led the offensive charge for the Huskies as of late, recording her 10th goal of the season at Providence last Sunday. Gross leads the team with 10 goals and four assists for 14 points this season, while Jennifer Chaisson (Cumberland, Ont.) and Kelly Horan (Mehtuen, Mass.) have also recorded double-digit points this year, posting 12 and 10 respectively. Chaisson, who increased her career assists total to 52 last weekend, ranks third all-time in the UConn record book and also ranks sixth with 75 career points.
As of Monday (Dec. 6) Gross, Chaisson and Horan each rank in the top-10 in Hockey East scoring categories, led by Gross who ranks third in freshmen scoring with 0.82 points per game, sixth in goal scoring, averaging 0.59 per game and seventh in game-winning goals with two. Chaisson ranks 10th in assist scoring, averaging 0.53 per game and Horan is also seventh with a pair of game-winning goals this season.
Alexandra Garcia (Pointe-Claire, Que.) recorded her eighth game with at least 30 saves this season when she posted 32 at Providence. Garcia has recorded 462 saves on the season, including a career-high of 41 at Minnesota Duluth back in October. She holds a career save percentage of .922, recording 1,327 career saves through 58 games.
Over the past seven contests UConn has held six of their opponents scoreless on power play opportunities, allowing just two goals on 23 opportunities. The Huskies rank third in the Hockey East with an 89% penalty kill percentage during conference games only, behind Boston College and Boston University. On the other side, the Huskies have posted four power play goals during that span, with goals from Brittany Murphy (Tewksbury, Mass.), Sami Evelyn (Nepean, Ont.), Horan and Chaisson.
So far this season four Huskies have posted at least three goals and three assists, led by Gross with her 10 goals and four assists. Chaisson has posted three goals and nine assists, Horan has tallied four goals and six assists and Evelyn has three goals and five assists on the season to round out the quartet.
This will be just the second game between the two schools, with UConn taking a 4-1 victory last season. Union (1-12-2) enters Wednesday's contest after losing three and tying two of their last five contests. Their lone victory of the season came against Sacred Heart and the two ties came as a 3-3 result to RPI and a 1-1 outcome against Brown.
