2010 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award Nominees Announced
STORRS, Conn. - USA Hockey announced the 45 players nominated for the 2010 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award and senior Cristin Allen (Pickering, Ont.) was among them. It is the second time that the No. 7 University of Connecticut women's ice hockey assistant captain has been nominated for the prestigious award. She is one of just six players who were also nominated in 2009 and is one of the eight student-athletes from the Hockey East to be among the nominees.
With 0.72 points per game, Allen is ninth in the NCAA among scoring defensemen and leads the conference in that category with 23 points. She is the highest ranked defensemen in overall points scored in the conference (t-13th) and is third with her team-best assist total of 20.
Allen became just the third defensemen to be named the Hockey East's Pure Hockey Player of the Week on Feb. 1. It was her second weekly accolade from the conference this season after pulling in Defensive Player of the Week accolades on Jan. 18.
The original list of 45 student-athletes will be trimmed to 10 by the NCAA Division I women's ice hockey coaches on March 2. The three finalists, announced on March 9, will be selected by a 13-member selection committee. The committee is also responsible for the selection of the 2010 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award recipient.
The award is named in honor of the late Patty Kazmaier, who was a four-year varsity letterwinner and All-Ivy League defenseman for Princeton University from 1981-86. Kazmaier, an accomplished student-athlete, helped lead the Tigers to three-consecutive Ivy League Championships (1981-84). At the age of 28, she passed away after a long struggle with a rare blood disease. For more information on the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award, please visit PattyKaz.com.
