STORRS, Conn. - Led by reigning BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week sophomore Kiersten Tupper (Camillus, N.Y.), the University of Connecticut lacrosse team (2-1) is in search of its third-straight victory of the season when the Huskies host Quinnipiac. The final of a season-long four-game homestand concludes with a 3 p.m. contest at George J. Sherman-Family Sports Complex on Wednesday.
It is the season opener for the Bobcats after having their originally scheduled opening game against Fairfield rescheduled due to weather on Feb. 24. Quinnipiac trails in the all-time series, 10-2, to Connecticut although the Bobcats have won the last two meetings. Last season's, 11-10 loss was the first of three one-goal decisions UConn would lose to its competitor in 2009.
Tupper leads the Huskies with 10 points, all from the two most recent games after being held without a point in the season-opening loss to UMass (Feb. 20). She tied her career-high in points (six) with two goals and four assists in the 17-7 Iona victory on Feb. 24. Tupper earned the conference's Offensive Player of the Week award by tacking on four points (2G, 2A) in the 13-5 win over Canisius on Feb. 28.
It is classmate M.E. Lapham (Cazenovia, N.Y.) that paces the Huskies with nine goals, accounting for all of her points. Lapham is second on the team in points scored. Junior Jillian Cerar (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and redshirt senior Ashley Mitchelides (Hudson, Ohio) have also been significant contributors to the UConn attack in the first three games.
Cerar has seven goals along with a single assist while Mitchelides has hit the back of the net five times while dishing a pair of assists.
Redshirt junior Lauren Sparks (West Chester, Pa.) has been instrumental with seven draw controls while Lapham as well as junior Jessica Mucci (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) have each won five.
The Huskies field defense has been led by freshman Kaitlyn Aldrich (Auburn, N.Y.) with a team-best seven ground balls while it has been fellow rookies Jordan Christopher (Downingtown, Pa.) and Dorian Gilmartin-Dzitko (Hillsborough, N.J.) who have each caused four turnovers.
Jenna Moulton (East Rochester, N.Y.) boasts a 10.33 goals-against average going into Wednesday's game after making 10 of her 22 total saves against Canisius (Feb. 28).
The first 50 students to arrive at Sherman Complex will receive free ice cream in honor of Student Appreciation Day.
