STORRS, Conn. - A three-run walkoff homerun by Kim Silva (Cheshire, Conn.) helped the University of Connecticut softball team to a sweep of Seton Hall Thursday. Silva's game two seventh inning blast was the first of her career and the fourth of the day for the Huskies.
With the wins, the Huskies improve to 21-24 on the year and 7-9 in BIG EAST play. Seton Hall drops to 19-26 in 2010 and 8-11 in conference action.
Game one began with a 15 minute top of the first in which the Huskies committed two errors, aided by the wind. Play began with an error on the shortstop Jess Arremony (Griswold, Conn.) after she misjudged a bounce and the leadoff hitter Michelle Reed made it on base. Reed came all the way around to score after a wind blown throw to first base by Amy DeLuca (Bordentown, N.J.) as Jamie Gates found herself on third base and the Pirates found themselves up a run early.
Starting pitcher Kiki Saveriano (Lexington, Mass.) worked herself out of the jam, allowing just the one unearned run. In the bottom half of the inning, the Huskies got the run back and then some as both Brittany Duclos (Mystic, Conn.) and Justyne Roy (North Dighton, Mass.) went deep to put the Huskies on top after the end of one.
Kristin Kaelin tied things up at two in the top of the third with a bomb to deep centerfield, but the Huskies regained the lead in the bottom half of the frame as Amy Vaughan (Somerset, Mass.) smacked a two run shot to dead center field for the 4-2 lead.
Neither team was able to score in the next few innings, but in the bottom of the sixth the Huskies padded their lead as two came around to score after a throwing error by Pirates third basemen Laura Canulli for the 6-2 advantage and the win.
Saveriano pitched the complete game, her 14th of the season, allowing six hits and just one earned run while striking out four.
In game two, after allowing two unearned runs in the top of the first, the Huskies evened things out in the bottom half of the inning as the first two batters to the plate came across the plate later in the inning. Julianne Towers (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) started things off with a single to right field, crossing the plate one batter later on a double down the leftfield line by Duclos. Duclos also crossed the plate in the next at bat on a single to centerfield by Amy DeLuca (Bordentown, N.J.) as the Huskies ended the inning in a 2-2 tie.
The Pirates went ahead in the second beating out some infield singles. Reed singled to third base to begin things, beating out the throw at second on a fielder's choice by Gates. She came across the plate on a single to left motoring home for the 3-2 advantage.
The Pirates tacked another on in the top of the sixth but the Huskies responded in the bottom half of the inning as Towers crossed the plate for the second time in the game.
In the bottom of the seventh, and down one, Silva came through for the Huskies launching her first career homerun on a three run shot to left centerfield for the walkoff victory.
Tricia Sullivan (New Bedford, Mass.) earned her seventh victory of the season with a seven inning seven strikeout effort allowing just one earned run.
The Huskies are back in action on Saturday, May 1 at Villanova where they will play the first two games of their three-game weekend series beginning at Noon.
