VILLANOVA, Pa. - In day one of play at Villanova, the University of Connecticut softball team was swept by the Wildcats in 3-1 and 4-0 decisions. Both Marissa Guches (Sammamish, Wash.) and Amy Vaughan (Somerset, Mass.) were 3-for-6 on the day with a double and two singles.
The Huskies drop to 21-26 on the season and 7-11 in BIG EAST play with the losses while Villanova improves their record to 23-27 in 2010 and 8-10 in the conference.
Neither team could score in game one until the Wildcats got on the board in the bottom of the fifth recording all of their runs in that inning. Three straight singles and three stolen bases helped the Wildcats take the lead. A double by Valerie Ortega brought in the eventual game winning run.
The Huskies put their first run of the day on the board in the top of the sixth. Julianne Towers (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) started things off with a single to right field and moved up to third in the next at bat when Brittany Duclos (Mystic, Conn.) knocked out a single and on a heads up play moved to second on the throw. Amy DeLuca (Bordentown, N.J.) loaded the bases after getting hit by a pitch and Justyne Roy (North Dighton, Mass.) came through for the Huskies with a single up the middle to score Towers. On the same play Duclos was tagged out at third for the Huskies first out of the inning.
A single by Vaughan loaded things up for the second time in the inning, but in the next at bat, DeLuca was forced out at home and a fly out in the next at bat ended the Huskies threat as UConn finished with a 3-1 loss.
Villanova got on top early in game two putting the game winning run on the board in the first inning. They added another three unearned runs in the fourth inning to pad their lead.
The Husky bats could only muster four hits in game two and were unable to put anything together to end with the 4-0 shut out.
UConn will finish out their series with Villanova on Sunday, May 2 at Noon.
