Huskies Participate In New England Championship

STORRS, Conn. - Fresh off their BIG EAST Indoor Championship, the University of Connecticut men's track and field team will be gunning for another title this weekend when they participate in the New England Championship. The meet will take place on Friday (Feb. 25) and Saturday (Feb. 26) with action beginning both days at 10:00 a.m. A complete meet schedule can be found HERE.
"The New England Championship is an important meet for us because it involves all of the teams in our region," head coach Greg Roy said. "We love to support the meet and it is a critical meet for the development of our younger athletes. This weekend some of our athletes will be attempting to qualify for the NCAA Championship, so it will certainly be an exciting meet to watch."
The Huskies have won five-straight New England Championships and 16 titles in the last 17 years. Last season, UConn brought home five first place finishes, including victories from Alex Bennatan in the 800 meter run, Michael DaPice in the 1,000 meter run, Kyle Rowbotham in the heptathlon and the 4x800 meter relay team of Alex and Tim Bennatan, Scott Johnson and Dan Holst.
As a team, UConn leads the Northeast Region for the fifth straight week according to the USTFCCCA Division I Regional Index, while 12 Huskies are in the top five of their respective events in the region.
Kevin Steinberg (60m dash - 6.73), Mike Rutt (800m run - 1:49.16), Noel James (high jump - 2.15m), Kyle Duggan (pole vault - 5.15m) and Aaron King (heptathlon - 5,444 pts.) each lead the region in their respective events, while Mike Alleman is second in the shot put (17.96m) and Dan Holst (1:50.02) is second in the 800 meter run.
Also in the top-five in the region are Kevin Smith (4-6.83) and Jesse Drinks (4-6.83) in the 60 meter dash, Tim Bennatan (5-1:50.36) in the 800 meter run and the 4x400 meter relay team, which is fifth (3:14.81).
Friday's events will begin at 10:00 a.m. with the 60 meter dash of the men's heptathlon and will conclude with the men's distance medley relay at 7:20 p.m. Saturday's activities will begin with the men's heptathlon, 60 meter hurdles at 10:00 a.m. and will end with the men's 4x400 meter relay at 4:30 p.m.
