Huelsenbeck Grand Slam Leads UConn Over Fairfield, 12-0

STORRS, Conn. - Andrea Huelsenbeck posted a grand slam in the bottom of the third inning to lead the University of Connecticut softball team as they blanked Fairfield, 12-0 this afternoon at the UConn Softball Complex. With the win, the Huskies improve to 9-8 on the season as the Stags fall to 5-6.
After a scoreless first inning the Huskies got on the board with one out in the bottom of the second. As the first batter to the plate, Amy Vaughan recorded a single through the left side and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Brittany Duclos reached first base on a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch as Vaughan moved up to third. After Kim Silva popped out to third base for the second out of the inning, Audrey Grinnell reached on an error, scoring Vaughan for the first run of the game.
Jennifer Ward kept the UConn offense going as she singled through the right side to load the bases for Julianne Towers, who posted a double to center field, registering three RBI to put UConn up, 4-0. With two outs, Huelsenbeck and Vaughan both got on base after Fairfield errors, allowing three additional runs to score, giving the Huskies a 7-0 lead after two innings.
Grinnell, Ward and Towers posted back-to-back singles in the bottom of the third inning to load the bases for Maddy Schiappa, who also singled. Schiappa's hit allowed Grinnell to score, and kept the bases loaded for Huelsenbeck. With just one out and the bases loaded, Huelsenbeck posted her first home run of the season, as she blasted a grand slam to center field, giving the Huskies a 12-0 lead after three innings.
UConn allowed just five Fairfield hits throughout the game, including doubles in the third and fifth innings.
Towers led the Huskies with three hits, three RBI and two runs on the day, while Ward tallied two hits and two runs.
Katelyn Callahan picked up the win for UConn, as she worked two innings with one strikeout. Kiki Saveriano started the game for the Huskies, pitching two innings with three strikeouts and allowed just one hit.
UConn will return to action this weekend when they participate in the Hofstra Tournament. The first game for the Huskies will be on Saturday (March 19) as they face Hofstra at 12:30 p.m.
