STORRS, Conn. - UConn women's track and field had two athletes compete tonight at the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa. Sophomore Brigitte Mania (Flemington, N.J.) and freshman Lauren Sara (Stratford, Conn.) competed in the 800m and 10,000m, respectively.
On day one of the NCAA Championships, a pair of UConn underclassmen competed at the highest level of collegiate track and field.
Sophomore All-American Brigitte Mania ran the 800m in 2:07.27 and placed 20th. Mania failed to qualify for the NCAA finals. Mania completed an excellent season in which she earned All-America honors as part of UConn's distance medley relay squad that placed 12th at the NCAA Indoor Championships earlier this season.
Lauren Sara ran the 10,000m in 36:01.52. Sara, the only freshman in contention for the NCAA Championship, placed 22nd. Duke sophomore Juliet Bottorff won the NCAA Title, running 34:25.86.
UConn will have two student-athletes compete in their respective heats on Thursday. Senior Meghan Cunningham (Simsbury, Conn.) will run in the semifinals of the 3,000m steeple chase at 7:30 p.m. Central Time.
Freshman Ilva Bikanova (Madonas, Latvia) will compete in the final of the high jump at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday night.
