STORRS, Conn.-The University of Connecticut women's cross country team kicked off the 2011 season with a bang as UConn earned a first place finish with seven Huskies in the top seven seats of the CCSU Blue Devil Invite on Friday afternoon at Stanley Quarter Park in New Britain, Conn. In addition to the top seven runners, five more finished in the top 25.
"The team had a very heavy training load this week and came off a difficult training session on Tuesday so I wasn't really sure what to expect as far as times, and frankly I wasn't all that concerned. The race was a great opportunity to get another hard workout in and dust the cobwebs off from the summer. I was overall very pleased with the effort today from the group and was able to get a good idea of where we are at this early stage of the season. I was actually a little surprised to see so many of them run personal bests on the course today. The key to the rest of the season is to keep working hard, stay healthy and build our team cohesion and confidence as we ready ourselves for the challenge of the Roy Griak Invitaitonal in a few weeks. That's the real test.," stated Head Coach Andrea Grove-McDonough.
Sophomore Lauren Sara (Stratford, Conn.) led the pack with a first place finish and a new personal best of 17:10. This marks the first time that Sara has recorded a first place finish. Freshman Lindsay Crevoiserat (Glastonbury, Conn.) took second place in her first collegiate meet with a 17:35 time. Along with Crevoisera, junior Shauna McNiff(Hingham, Mass.) also recorded a personal best with 17:35.

She was followed by freshman Lindsay Crevoiserat who made a great debut for us in a virtual tie with her teammate Shauna McNiff who showed great leadership in keeping the tempo up in the later stages of the race."
