STORRS, Conn. - Despite never trailing by a set, the University of Connecticut volleyball team constantly fought from behind to earn a 3-1 victory over Villanova in the BIG EAST opener at Gampel Pavilion on Friday night. The Huskies improved to 10-6 overall and are 1-0 in league play, winning their opener for the first time since 2006, while the Wildcats dropped to 5-9 and 0-1.

UConn was down 16-14 in the first set before an 8-0 rally, which was capped by back-to-back blocks by sophomore Devon Maugle (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) and freshman Erika Thomas (Ocoee, Fla.), put the Huskies on top 22-16. Connecticut went on to take the opening set, 25-20.

Villanova came back to even the match at a set apiece with a 25-19 win in the second. The Huskies had their most convincing set of the net in the third, winning it 25-17 and hitting .289, collectively.

In the fourth, the Wildcats held an early advantage and led 16-12 before a Connecticut timeout. Out of the break, the Huskies netted four consecutive points, including kills by senior Angela Roidt (McFarland, Wis.) and junior Jackie Wattles (Liberty Hill, Texas), to even the set at 16-16. UConn outscored Villanova 9-4 for the remainder of the game, behind two kills each by Maugle and freshman Madeline Kuppe (Palo Alto, Calif.), to finish off the Wildcats, 25-20.

Maugle posted her team-leading fifth double-double of the season behind a 15-kill, 10-dig effort. Senior outside hitter Mattison Quayle recorded her fourth with 13 kills and a season-high 16 digs.

For the Wildcats, senior Krista Anderson and freshman Lauren Carpenter led the attack with 13 kills, apiece. Junior libero Mariah Henley picked up a game-high 28 digs, while freshman setter Emma Pettit dished out 26 assists.

Earning her second straight start, Roidt collected a season-high 45 assists to go with 10 digs. Senior libero Kelsey Maving (Tonawanda, N.Y.) recorded a team-best 23 digs.

The Huskies are back in action on Sunday afternoon when they host Georgetown at 2:00 pm.
