UConn's Jessica Lutz Leads Switzerland To Bronze In Sochi

SOCHI - UConn alum Jessica Lutz ('10) scored at 13:53 of the third period to lift the Switzerland women's ice hockey team to a Bronze medal with a 4-3 victory over Sweden on Thursday (Feb. 20) in the 2014 Sochi Games. The game-clinching goal for Lutz was her second tally of the tournament and sparked Switzerland to its first medal in the history of Swiss women's ice hockey.
The Swiss trailed 2-0 going into the third period, before a furious rally tied the contest at 2-2. Lutz then redirected a pass from Lara Stalder past the Swedish goaltender at 13:53 to give Switzerland its first lead of the day. Switzerland tacked on an empty net goal to make it 4-2, before Sweden pulled within one in the final minute to make it 4-3. The Swiss held on despite the late tally and took home the medal.
Switzerland reached the medal round after defeating Russia in the quarterfinals on Feb. 15, 2-0. The Swiss were then topped, 3-1, by Canada in the semifinal round, in a game that saw Lutz score her first Olympic goal. It was her second point of the tournament, as she also picked up an assist in a preliminary round game against Finland.
Overall for the tournament, Lutz finished with a 2-1-3 scoring line, tying for the team-highs in goals and points in her six games. She skated in 109:00 in the six contests, and fired 11 shots on goal.
Lutz played at UConn from 2007-10, skating in 95 games and compiling a 4-13-17 scoring line. During her three years in Storrs before graduating early, UConn went 62-29-16, and Lutz finished her career with a +4 plus/minus. She is the first medalist in the Winter Olympics in the history of UConn athletics.
