PHILADELPHIA - The UConn women's lacrosse team remains undefeated in Big East conference play with an exciting 9-8 win in overtime against Temple Wednesday at Geasey Field. Senior Alyson Fazio (Methuen, Mass.) netted the game-winning goal in overtime to give the Huskies the victory and preserve their undefeated status in the conference.
Senior captain Alexandra Crofts recorded her second consecutive hat trick and led the team with three goals. Senior goalkeeper Shannon Nee (Lancaster, Pa.) gave an outstanding 13-save performance to help UConn to its tenth win of the season.
Crofts opened the scoring two minutes into the contest and did not stop until she had earned a hat trick within the first 12 minutes of the game.
Temple attacker Megan Pinkerton scored for the Owls after Crofts' first goal to tie things up 1-1, but the UConn captain nabbed back-to-back scores to give UConn a 3-1 lead with 18:04 left to play in the first half.
Sophomore Grace Nolan (Marcellus, N.Y.) joined in on the scoring at 16:17 in the first, to put the Huskies on top 4-1. The remaining 16 minutes went without a goal from either team and the first half came to a close with UConn leading 4-1.
The Owls came out firing at the start of the second half, scoring two goals in the first five minutes to make it 4-2. Junior Jacqueline Jordan (Los Gatos, Calif.) scored UConn's first goal of the second half, her 16th of the season, to reclaim a two-goal lead.
After Temple scored again to bring the Owls within one goal of the Huskies, Big East Attacker of the Week, junior Maggie Tripodi (Syracuse, N.Y.) scored her fifth goal in the last two games to extend UConn's lead to 6-4 with 22:26 on the clock in the second.
The Owls managed to tie things up with back-to-back goals less than 20 seconds apart. Nolan scored her second of the afternoon at 16:30 to temporarily reclaim the lead for UConn, but Temple scored three minutes later to knot the score up 7-7.
Sophomore Kelsey Catalano (Stony Brook, N.Y.) gave UConn yet another one-goal lead, but Temple answered 30 seconds later to make it 8-8 with 8:07 remaining. Time expired with no further scoring and game went into overtime.
Fazio found the back of the net 4:36 into extra minutes to give UConn the sudden victory and end it 9-8. UConn improves to 10-2 overall with a perfect 4-0 conference slate while Temple drops to 9-4 overall and 1-2 in Big East contests.
