Four Huskies Compete at 2016 USATF Juniors

CLOVIS, Calif. - After wrapping up strong outdoor seasons in late May, four UConn women's track and field standouts, Courtney Akerley, Lindsey Kane, Mary Monda Oewel and Erika Randazzo competed during a three-day stretch at the 2016 USATF Junior Championships at Veteran's Memorial Stadium on June 24-26 in California.
All athletes in the competition must be 19 years-old or younger. The top two finishers in each event advanced to represent the United States at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland.
Akerley, who qualified for the 3,000m run after turning in a collegiate-best 10:02.82 second finish at the NYC Gotham Cup in January, finished ninth in the event on Saturday, crossing the finish line in a lifetime best 9:58.89 seconds. Kane competed in Friday's 1,500m run prelim and finished 14th with a time of 4:41.08 seconds.
Erika Randazzo, whose season-best 5,000m run time (17:18.69) came at the Penn Relays, was the first of two Huskies to cross the finish line in Friday's prelim, turning in a 17:41.76 second result on her way to 10th place overall. Teammate Monda Oewel collected a 14th-place finish with a time of 18:08.52 seconds.
