STORRS, Conn. - Following a six-day trip to Portland, Ore. for the PK80 Invitational, the UConn men's basketball team returns to campus for a home game against Columbia on Wednesday night at Gampel Pavilion. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
When the Huskies (4-2) meet the Lions (1-4), they will look to snap a two-game skid after losses to No. 4 Michigan State and Arkansas. SNY will broadcast the game, while the UConn/IMG Radio Network (WTIC 1080 AM) will have the call.
Four games remain for UConn before an 11-day break for final exams - including three home contests against Columbia, Monmouth (Dec. 2) and Coppin State (Dec. 9). A neutral site game against rival Syracuse at Madison Square Garden is on the horizon, slated for Dec. 5 in the Jimmy V Classic.
Head coach Kevin Ollie's team first prepares for its Ivy League foe this week, coming off a 35-point loss to Arkansas on Sunday. Junior guard Jalen Adams, who averaged 21 points per game in the PK80, looks to help UConn bounce back.
Redshirt junior Terry Larrier had a good stay on the West Coast, as the forward scored 18 points in each game of the tournament. Adams and Larrier accounted for 60-percent of UConn's total points in Portland.
The Huskies produced a 71-63 win over hometown Oregon in the first round of the PK80 on Thanksgiving night, as redshirt freshman Alterique Gilbert recorded 16 points in the win - putting UConn on the winner's side of the Victory Bracket.
UConn enters Wednesday's game with a 3-0 record at home and it leads the all-time series with Columbia, 8-2. The Lions' last victory against the Huskies came in 1976 (series began in 1953).
SCOUTING COLUMBIA
The Lions are riding a three-game losing streak heading into Wednesday's matchup with UConn. Most recently, Columbia lost to Colgate on the road - 77-71 - a team that the Huskies beat in the season-opener, 70-58. Sophomore guard Mike Smith leads the team in scoring, averaging 17.4 points per game. Four Lions are averaging double-figures.
SHOOTING DIFFERENCES
In UConn's four wins this season, the team is shooting 43-percent from the floor. In the two losses, the Huskies are averaging just a 36.4-percent clip from the field. Among players who have attempted at least 20 shots, three players are shooting over 40-percent this season for UConn - Adams, Larrier and graduate student Antwoine Anderson.
