UConn Clipped by Temple, 4-3, in AAC Match

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The UConn women's tennis team played their first American Athletic Conference match of the spring on Saturday and came-up short, 4-3, in a battle with the Temple Owls. The loss dropped UConn to 4-4 on the year and 0-1 in the AAC.
The Huskies opened the match with a sweep in doubles play led by the No. 1 team of senior Emma Alderman (Hingham, Mass.) and junior Yelyzaveta Pletnyeva (Vinnitsa, Ukraine) who posted a 6-0 win over Alina Abdurakhimova and Dina Karina.
Sophomores Gillian Perrotta (Scarsdale, N.Y.) and Jacquelyn Fitz-Randolph (Tampa, Fla.) fought to a 7-6 (3) win at No. 2 over Monet Stuckey-Willis and Yana Khon, improving to a 11-5 as a team this season. Senior Shea Flanagan (Overland Park, Kans.) and sophomore Jacqueline Lazaro (Largo, Fla.) posted a 7-5 win at No. 3 Anais Nussaume and Mariana Bedon.
Pletnyeva continued to the Huskies' roll into singles play, winning her sixth-straight match by beating Stuckey-Willis at No. 2, 6-2 and 6-3. Pletnyeva has not lost a singles match this spring as she raises her record to 7-1 at No. 2 and 14-3 overall.
Temple would pull ahead 3-2 in the match with wins at No. 1 and the No. 3 and 4 spots but Flanagan would pull the Huskies even at 3-3 with a win at No. 6. Flanagan dispatched Mariana Bedon, 6-2 and 6-4.
The No. 5 match-up between junior Zaina Zaki (West Chester, Pa.) and Nussaume decided Saturday's match-up with the two battling to three-sets. Nussaume won the first, 6-4, but Zaki asnwered in the second, 6-2. Nussaume gave the Owls the win with a 6-4 third set win.
The Huskies return to the court on Sunday, February 26th when they host Cornell at the East Hartford Tennis Club.
