STORRS, Conn. - The UConn men's tennis team earned their first win of the spring season on Saturday night, defeating Merrimack College, 6-1 at the East Hartford Tennis Club. The Huskies are now 2-3 in dual match play this season.
"This was a well earned team victory," commented head coach Michael Louis. "Our guys bounced back well tonight after a tough hard fought match last night. We just built on that level of fight and energy tonight against a good team that made us earn every point."
The Huskies opened with a strong performance in doubles, sweeping for the early point. The sophomore team of Hank Hill (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) and Justin Warren (Durham, N.C.) got things started at No. 1 with a 6-3 win over Mikhail Belov and Nick Majewski. The freshman-senior combo of Jacob Appleton (Farmington, Conn.) and Arnaud Valentin (Ridgefield, Conn.) clinched the point at No. 2, beating Frank Vega and Alex Fedorov, 6-2.
Both Appleton and Hill finished their weekend's 2-0 in singles play thanks to wins at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively. Appleton took care of Fedorov, 6-3 and 6-2 while Hill beat Alex Slobin, 6-1 and 6-1. Hill improved to 7-4 on the season.
Valentin won his No. 2 singles match with Vega, 7-6 (5) and 6-3, and improved to a team-best 8-4 on the season. Junior Jonathan Edwards (Isle of Palms, S.C.) ran his record to 6-2 with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 6 over James Hook. Warren wrapped up singles play with a win at No. 3, beating Nick Majewski, 6-3 and 6-4.
The Huskies will be back in action with a pair of matches at West Point next weekend, facing Army and Buffalo.
