The freshman sets new season high in kills
ORLANDO, Fla.—The UConn women's volleyball team ended their trip to the sunshine state with a match against the University of Central Florida on Sunday afternoon, with a final of 3-1.
The two teams opened the contest tick-for-tack, with neither team gaining much momentum or space from the other. However, the Huskies (11-9, 3-4 AAC) were able to string together a key series to turn the tide, orchestrated by freshman Caylee Parker. Parker's clutch kill tied to first set up at 9-9.
Fellow freshman Anna Petrova followed with a kill of her own to even it back up at 10-10. The next set of plays allowed UConn to eventually run away with set one led by sophomore Isabelle Peterson. After Petrova's point, Peterson was credited with causing a UCF (16-3, 7-0 AAC) attack error. She would then nab a service ace and be credited with causing another UCF attack error. Petrova would score again for the Huskies on an assist from Peterson. At this point in the set UConn would be up 14-10 over UCF causing the Knights to take a timeout before the Husky 25-18 set one takeover.
Set two started off with the Huskies taking the first point, thanks to Petrova. UConn would fall behind to UCF, but a late rally put them within reach of the Knights. However, a pair of attack errors caused the rally to fizzle. UCF took the match 3-1 to remain unbeaten in the conference and on their home court.
Freshman Kennadie Jake-Turner was the driving force behind UConn's efforts on the afternoon. Jake-Turner set a new season high for herself in the kills category with 11. She also led the match in hitting percentage at .714 while adding an assist and five total blocks. Senior Emma Turner ended the match right behind Jake-Turner in hitting percentage with .667. In the assist column, Turner and redshirt-freshman Courtney Morris (new season high) contributed 19 and 17 respectively. Senior Elizabeth Kline is on a nine-game streak where she has had double-digit digs, ending this match with 13.
The Huskies return home to Gampel Pavilion next week to host Tulane (Friday, Oct. 19 at 7:00 p.m.) and Memphis (Sunday, Oct. 21 at 1:00 p.m.).
